Markup vs. Margin Calculator
Turn a markup into a margin (and back) and see the real price and profit on any job.
Markup and margin are not the same number
Markup is profit as a percent of your cost. Margin is profit as a percent of the selling price. Same dollars, different base, so the margin is always smaller. If you need a 20% margin to cover overhead and profit, a 20% markup won’t get you there.
| If you mark up | Your margin is |
|---|---|
| 10% | 9.1% |
| 15% | 13.0% |
| 20% | 16.7% |
| 25% | 20.0% |
| 30% | 23.1% |
| 35% | 25.9% |
| 40% | 28.6% |
| 50% | 33.3% |
Margin = markup ÷ (1 + markup). Markup = margin ÷ (1 − margin).
